Reality Blurred 59782c04c3cad83b16b7ae72c741968b0d28e118TIME: April 16th at 22.36h.

PLACE: Some Eastern part of the Forest.

WEATHER: Clear, fresh and a little humid.

ATTIRE: A stained dark-green t-shirt, black
trousers and dirty white sneakers.

DEDICATED: @Rafael

It had been a good while since Luke had stepped foot in this par of the forest. Last time, the clearing had been filled with bright, hot fire, and loud screams and growls had echoed through the thick trunks of the ancient, towering trees. It had been a fight; the last time he had fought for anything, really, and he had fought for Rafael. And for Victoria; for her to stay alive and heal from deep claws that had opened her side and turned the cold February night sticky and bloody and painful. A pain much echoed in the Shapeshifter’s face as he stumbled through the last heavy vegetation and uncharacteristically clumsily fell into the forest clearing.
Blood stained the side of his bearded face, it’s origin a series of small cuts around his left eyebrow, and as he managed to raise and arm to take the impact from the ground now that he was not protected by frail branches anymore, he groaned and took a solemn second to curl up on the dewy grass and protectively wrap his hand around his side.
His ribs hurt from whichever of the many punches that had managed to hit just right and with every speedy heartbeat that pushed blood through his body, heat spread through him. A defeated chuckle left his bust lip. “Oh, God damnit,” he muttered, breathing out a little more controlled this time in an attempt to still the pain in the ribs whenever his lungs expanded too quickly. Embarrassing.
With yet another low groan he placed a hand on the grass and gave a push to gently roll sideways onto his back. Last time. Last time right here, he had been a whole lot more heroic and poised, he thought to himself. What a strange full circle it felt like. Tonight had been the complete opposite of that night. Victoria had cast him aside this time and it stung worse than any of the stupid bruises and cuts.

There were stars tonight, battling to light up the sky along with the full moon. Pretty, clear and lulling him into a state of comfort through the pain, not a thought sent to the recklessness of being near a warewolf pack on a night like this.. It didn’t feel so bad here. Surrounded by nature and the beginning spring and the smell of something familiar and homely. He didn’t even know if this was theoretically part of the Pack Territory or if he was just on the edge of it, but it smelt like werewolves and if he hadn’t found that smell calming and protective before, he certainly did now, after Cecilia’s transformation.
A mild smile tugged the corners of his mouth upwards when he heard rustling somewhere in the woods that surrounded him. It could have been a rabbit. Or a fox or a deer. But it most probably was not.
“I need a drink,” he let known, his voice ringing out clearly into the calm darkness. “Been a real shit evening, man, I gotta tell you that.”
It had not been a clear plan to seek out his old friend; especially not like this, but he had cast one look in the window of a car to realise that he couldn’t go home. His girlfriend would not take kindly to him getting a beating but would take even less kindly to him drowning it in alcohol, he thought to himself. But by God and all the other Holy beings he could think of, did he need one, and so for once, the thought of Cecilia faded from his loud head with every sway of the treetops

It didn’t often occur that an outsider entered werewolf territory on a full moon, let alone for someone to wander the forest at all. Most people knew better than that. It wasn’t just werewolves who lurked threateningly in the shadows at night. With his heightened senses, he heard footsteps rustling beyond his borders. Two feet as opposed to the many four-legged wolves roaming the forest. Yet the alpha still sat by the firepit and stared into its embers. His black claws scratched lazily against the armrest of his chair. He hadn’t been himself the past two weeks, and though he should feel different on a night like this, the moon’s power hadn’t proved strong enough. Hadn’t managed to uplift his dreary mood. He would join the others later when his instincts eventually gave in. But for now, he remained seated. It didn’t mean that he abandoned his responsibilities entirely as he kept attentive to his surroundings—at the smallest sign of danger in his territory. Another uncharacteristic noise reached his hearing and he sat a little straighter. He could have sworn the person had just stumbled. He inhaled deeply through his nostrils. Blood. He smelled blood. He cocked his head in the direction of the scent and arose from his seat. The stranger had now warranted his investigation.

Eyes of crimson appeared bright in the darkness of night, lowering to the person laying on the ground. His eyes widened slightly as he realized that he recognized him. Lucas? He had sensed the familiarity but not wanted to believe that it stemmed from someone he knew. What the hell was he doing here? He stepped into the clearing, his tanned skin easily deciphered from the black t-shirt and darkened jeans, depicting a werewolf who hadn't yet transformed. Black streaks of tribal tattoos decorated his upper arms, his right forearm showcasing one that nearly reached his wrist.
His fangs became exposed at his comment, shining lethal in the light of the moon. “This is not the right time or place to be stargazing, Luke.” His lips twisted into a smile as he glanced up at the bright moon, beckoning him to transform into his beast form. He flexed his hand uncomfortably, preventing his bones from breaking and expanding. His eyes glanced to the side of Luke’s face where he’d been bleeding. He could tell that he’d been in a fight, but it still didn’t explain why he had ventured so far. Why he’d risk far worse happening to him. Even if he knew this was Rafael’s territory, and he’d eventually find him, he didn’t have full control over the things that could happen before it got to that. “Trying to get yourself killed?” With a tilt of the head, his red eyes caught his. “Stumbling into werewolf territory like some injured prey.” He clicked his tongue and moved his gaze over his body to spot any additional wounds. It didn’t exactly surprise him to see him in this state, but it hadn’t happened for what seemed like forever. So, why now?

He crouched down and gripped around his wrist, transferring some of his pain to himself. It wasn’t a question to him when someone he cared about was hurting, so he wouldn’t listen to any protests. It was first then he realized the sharp blows he’d taken to his ribs, feeling his own ache terribly to the point where he had to let go. He then arose and extended a hand to help him get on his feet. The other palm massaged a spot underneath his ribcage as if that would help soothe the pain. “You good?” he asked, referring to his ability to walk the remaining distance to his cabin where the prospect of a drink was.

The Shapeshifter could only agree, he realised, with the familiar accent that broke the near silence. The directness and honesty was mild and friendly and there was the hint of a smile in the dark voice.
Shifting his gaze from the night sky, the moonlight caught onto fangs, reflecting the pale light; and along with the eyes of an Alpha, it was a sight of power and control. Had Lucas not known the wolf he would have been scared no doubt; but not tonight. His own vision had gotten used to the night long ago, and the features of his friend were clear and visible through the darkness. No doubt being uncovered under the full moon would be a painful ordeal and Lucas opened his mouth to apologise for being messy on a night like this before the voice cut off his jumbled train of thought.
Trying to get yourself killed?
A low chuckle escaped him and he turned his eyes from the alpha back to the star speckled roof above them. “Yeah, no. Not great, is it,” he agreed in a low mumble. It felt inherently like being reprimanded by a parent - even if it was mainly his own thoughts doing the reprimanding and the werewolf actually had sounded really mild. Was he really to explain himself? Could he even do so? In this haze of disappointment and violence that the whole evening had been, he had not been thinking clearly. The initial thought that he couldn’t go home suddenly seemed silly; Cecilia would not even be there. Not tonight. She would be with Irina in the forest and he could have easily just walked back without risking the car. In fact, he should have most definitely gone to Irina’s. Make sure Cecilia was okay. Was it simply that he needed to know? To make sure that at least Rafael wouldn’t do what Victoria had just done?
Luke groaned in annoyance at himself. “Sorry, man. The car broke down a few miles out.” Clearly sabotaged after the beating, a tire had gone flat as soon as he had exited the lit up roads from the city and entered the forest. In between home and here he had made the reckless choice of continuing his journey through the moonlit, ancient forest.

“Injured prey, huh?” He managed a sarcastic mutter and raised his hand towards Rafael to allow his friend to help him back on his feet. He quickly realised that the intention had not been to help him up. Luke’s eyebrows knitted together to create  a faint ‘v’ in his forehead and instinctively jerked his arm backwards as soon as the werewolf grabbed hold of his wrist, knowing well what was about to happen. His eyes removed themselves from the sky to lock stubbornly with Rafael’s. Raf, don’t-“ The muffled protest faded as quickly as it had appeared and his tense arm immediately went weak. The pain dulled and his eyes lit up in a moment of blissful peace when the pain seeped out of his body. He had hardly realised just how much it had spread until it was no longer there and a wave of exhaustion followed the peace he felt.
He had to grab hold tightly of Rafael’s hand to steady himself, gently bouncing off of the soles of his feet, feeling out how his body reacted to different pressures and slow movements. A few seconds of focus to press a hand onto his ribs was enough to know that nothing was broken. At least there was that, he thought to himself. A few more kicks like that would have surely done the job.
Luke’s eyes raised back up, refocusing on the crimson in front of him. He hummed a small ‘yes’ to confirm that he was well enough to walk. That was the only ‘good’ he could give for now he knew. “You?” He asked with a nod to encourage confirmation, worried that he had absorbed too much pain. The hand Rafael had placed on his own ribs hadn’t gone unnoticed.
“I - uh.” He momentarily pinched his lips together and placed a hand on the broad shoulder of the Alpha, gesturing that he was good to go but still not quite ready to walk without the little support the movement gave him. Even before he spoke, he knew that his words would be loaded with apologetic emotions out of his control. “I found Vic.” And it was hardly explanation enough, but somehow it felt like he could justify the state he was in. At least just a little.

The night had ended in a fight and when all he wanted was to get home from that his car decided to break down on him in the forest on a full moon. It suddenly made sense that he’d stayed down after his fall. His night couldn’t get much worse. “I’m sorry to hear it.” He looked in the direction of the road to remember the location for later. Despite the less ideal timing, it didn’t change much of his plans for the night. There was no initiation, scheduled vampire hunt, or important ritual happening. As far as he was concerned it was yet another night he needed to get through.
Injured prey, huh? His grin widened slightly. In most other circumstances, his statement would have been false. But what kind of friend would he be if he didn’t take the opportunity to poke fun at him the one time it wasn’t. More than that, his playful grin covered up for what otherwise would have been a pitiful expression, and the last thing he wanted was for him to feel worse about the situation.

He stood still when Luke regained his footing, worry flickering beneath the remnants of a smile as he now knew part of the pain he’d dealt with. But once he gave some affirmation that he was good, he let go of his hand and gave him a nod to signal that he was fine as well. He’d turned partially away from him when he felt a firm hand on his shoulder and gave him another assessing glance. But it seemed that he just needed the extra support—not that he was about to lose his balance completely. And whatever he had been trying to say, whatever had got him into that fight, he was not going to be the least judgmental. Rafael had most likely gotten in to a fight for less, and he had every reason to believe that Luke had been pushed far for it to get this bad.
But when he revealed that first hint, Rafael almost halted to a full stop. Of all the things he’d expected him to say, that was not it. He continued for a few more steps before he sighed, bracing himself for the topic. It hurt plenty on its own to think about. “Then you got further than me. I asked for her at the casino last week to drop off a few things but got told to leave by a siren.” So, that’s what he’d done. If that was the welcome he was to receive, then he could only assume it meant Vic had told people she didn’t want to see him. And the worst part of it was that he had no idea why. He never got an answer to what her problem with him was, but he wished it hadn’t turned out that way. That they could just talk like they once had. To not see someone he’d fallen in love with prove herself to be as bad as most people he’d met. But he didn’t find any reason for her to treat Luke the way she had towards him. So, why was he here looking like something the cat had dragged in? Rafael knew there had to be a lot more to that story. “What happened?” He knew it had been bad. But beyond that, he felt hopeful at the chance of hearing how she was doing. If she was safe and well. And most of all, he hoped he would tell him that she didn’t play any part in what had happened to him. That it was unrelated somehow. Because if it wasn’t... it would just prove his point that much more.

Reality Blurred Empty
IndlægEmne: Sv: Reality Blurred   Reality Blurred EmptyMan Jun 13, 2022 10:45 pm

The turn of the evening had most possibly been the shapeshifter’s own fault, but that didn’t mean the small acknowledgement from an old friend did harm - on the contrary it warmed remarkably.  He could only really shrug his misfortune off, though, knowing well that the scenario could have been avoided had he simply thought it through; the fight with Victoria, the fight with the guys on the street and the sabotage of his car.
There had been a small, hesitant moment where Luke had thought that the Alpha would have turned to him with anger or judgement in his eyes, or perhaps even annoyance, but instead what met him was lowered shoulders and deflated defeat that sparked worry in Luke’s eyes, as they crossed the wilderness of the eastern Forrest.
Worry turned to knitted eyebrows and he took his gaze from the path they were following, to regard the bearded face beside him cautiously. The siren.
Luke had to summit a sincere amount of self control to not roll his eyes excessively at the thought of the siren. At least she had seemed to attempt to deescalate the situation after the Phoenix brother had arrived to puff up his chest and nick all of his money. With that thought and the whole showdown playing like a film in his mind, he couldn’t contain the eye roll; though more discrete and natural than what his first urge had been. A low hum escaped him, letting the taller male know that he fully understood. They seemed like a very protective people that had no time to listen or understand before jumping conclusions. “Suppose you were less offensive than me then,” he muttered. Not in any way to compare the two of them - the embarrassment in his voice was evident of that - but to further explain why he was in the state that he was in.
”I got told to piss off by Chief Dickhead of the Flaming Flamingos.” His heart beat a little faster as the thought of the ridiculous Phoenix brother had adrenaline spike through his body. Thankfully the feeling made it easier to walk, and he found himself slowly straightening his back and applying less pressure on the supportive shoulder.

The thought of a drink seemed just about heavenly by then. It would dull the aching body but more so, it might succeed in filling the empty hole that the evening seemed to have pierced through his heart. ”She’s just so goddamn-“ Luke tried finding the right way of explaining it; letting the swearword fade into a hesitant pause before picking up again. ”She’s so determined that we want to control her life or something - so fucking hostile. It just threw me, man.” You have forgotten who you were before you got that fancy job. A stinging comment from a woman who was much more like a sister than a friend. A comment that after tonight felt more untrue than ever judging by the events of the evening. Perhaps that exact comment had hit a sore spot that had him wanting to show that he hadn’t changed a bit and that latter option scared the living hell out of him.
”I called Brother Bird some not-so-nice names in front of a lot of people that didn’t like that. Managed to not hit his smug face on the way out but - eh - didn’t so much manage the few people that waited around the corner.” The shame had disappeared from his voice and slowly turned into a sheepish smile. He was not proud of having taken on a crowd - reckless and surely doomed from the beginning - but in hindsight the stupidity was almost ridiculously funny. It even provoked a defeated chuckle. “Got a few hits in but, yeah. Was not a pretty one. Really poor, in fact.”
Luke shook his head but stopped midway to wince at the sensation that pierced through the painful spot behind his eyes. Had he really lost that part of himself, it made him wonder, as the fresh forest air cooled the heat on his body. The doubt in his mind seemed self sabotaging at most, because deep down he knew that he would never want to be the person he had been back then, on the streets of Moonlight Falls and then at the Serpents. But it was a big part of him and of many of his friendships and it was a scary thought indeed. ”Think we’ve lost it, Raf?” He mumbled, the smile having disappeared as quickly as it had appeared in the first place. Is that why she’s pushing us away?” He didn’t even entirely know what it was. Themselves, perhaps. The street. The survival. The core.

Rafael could have insisted on seeing her but there was no point in it when she clearly cared less for it. But Luke’s situation had to be different. It wasn’t like he’d chosen a side. He wouldn’t have. He’d most likely just gone with the intent to check on her. The question was just what events transpired for that to get to this.
A quiet chuckle escaped at his name-calling of Francis. He’d never liked the shapeshifter brothers much, but he’d not openly gone against them either. If they had come by him that night to tell him to piss off, he wouldn’t have left so easily. Not without giving them a piece of his mind first.

He nodded slowly as he revealed part of what their conversation had been about. “She told me the same thing if I raised my brow at her for hanging with those shifters.” Rafael was the last guy to ever try to control anyone’s life. Hell, if he cared. He viewed his own freedom highly and would only be a hypocrite for standing in the way of someone else’s. But he had to question her choice, to make sure it was what she really wanted. To understand why she felt compelled to pursue that drastic change in her life in the first place. He had to ask because she was acting weird and their relationship was falling apart, and talking about it was the only way for him to try and save it. “I confronted her about the stealing because I was trying to figure out why she did it. And her behavior would instantly turn hostile.” He clenched his fists as they entered a small clearing that allowed the moonlight to peer through the canopy, the emerging emotions not making it easier to give in to the ache in his bones. “But it wasn’t just that. No matter what I tried to talk about, she always found a way to paint me as the bad guy. Even if everything I said came from a place of worry. Even if I just wanted to understand what she was going through. And I couldn’t just say nothing because part of me knew that her going back there was another fall incident waiting to happen.” He knew Luke had to share those same concerns. They’d almost lost Jack and Victoria back then. Of course, no one was spared the dangers that roamed these lands. But leaving Southside had helped tremendously. And staying together had always seemed the best way for them to stay as safe as possible.

They had just left the clearing when faint lights became decipherable behind the trees. “I wish I could say I would’ve saved you the embarrassment, but I have a feeling it’d just ended worse with me being there.” If he’d been provoked enough, angry enough, he wouldn’t have stopped him from going after them. Chances were he’d have joined him. It wasn’t the smartest thing to do and maybe he would have handled it differently, but there was absolutely nothing fair about the way she treated him. It was damn frustrating. There was no wish to resolve anything from her side, it was just pure animosity.
He exhaled slowly at his question, looking into the air with a contemplative expression. Truth was, his own mind had been increasingly influenced by doubts these past weeks. He had no idea if they were where they were supposed to be. If he was who he was supposed to become. Nor did he know why she was pushing Luke away. Himself he could understand to some degree, but just because she’d decided to cut him out of her life, it didn’t mean she had to do the same to someone like Luke. Especially not when it was grounded in a misunderstanding of her thinking he was trying to control her life. “No,” he replied because he had to believe that what they’d done was right. “Sticking with this. Trying to become better people. That’s the opposite of being lost.” He turned his eyes to Luke, not wanting him to doubt that. And it helped to say aloud for his own sake as well.

Hostility was not foreign to him - to them, probably - but coming from someone he considered family, had felt like a physical punch in the face. He could only listen and nod in recognition of the words and experiences that seemed to be parallel to his own. He let himself be guided into more homely territories of the forest, the scents of the pack mingling delightfully with the aromas from the dewy woodland and with the heightened awareness of the smells surrounding him, he also quickly caught on to the metallic that most likely stemmed from his blood. With a head that was clearing by every slow step, he felt the heaviness of the stupidity he’d been getting into by coming here on a night like this. It was an anger that clouded his mind – a recognisable and familiar one that he had not had to deal with for a long time.
Luke was not oblivious to the emotions that roamed around in the Alpha next to him and found his bruised hands squeezing Rafael’s shoulder gently, as they entered the meadowy clearing. He hummed. “I don’t – I really don’t understand what happened with her.” Maybe that was the gist of it. He didn’t understand what had happened; what was going on for her to act like this, and when he had tried to ask and to understand, he had been told to leave. “I thought she was okay. She seemed okay, right?” She had seemed surprisingly fine after everything. She’d resumed teaching even and had really felt as balanced as ever until this detonation of anger had hit. “I don’t like it. I have a feeling they’re gonna get her into trouble, Raf,” he muttered. A place like that – organised crime – was an invitation for trouble.

Luke visibly perked up by the glints of lights behind the long lines of towering trees. A very genuine smile found its way, the blue eyes flickering lightly of some nostalgic warmth. The movement caused his lips to sting terribly and he scoffed before forcing the smile to dim. They shared a few of the same bad habit the two of them, and he could only agree that had the werewolf been present, the fight would have ended … well not as embarrassingly one-sided but a hundred times more explosive. “At least I’d have shared the embarrassment.”
His eyebrows furrowed and he gave a light shake to his head. “Good God, man,” he mumbled, feeling the stinging humiliation once again. “And I spend my days teaching kids to do the exact opposite of this shit.”

The silence after his question felt calming; as if the question had merely been rhetorical in some ways. Perhaps they shared the same doubts which was indeed a calming thought. They’d made it a lot closer to the lights, casting streaky shadows onto the forest ground and moving gently along with the treetops, when a confident ‘no’ filled the quietness. Luke’s eyebrows knitted lightly in his forehead, as much as they could without the stinging sensation above his right eye would be too heavy, and he heard himself draw a shaky breath. He had needed that quite desperately, he realised, as he sought his friend’s eyes through the dark.
Trying to become better people. That’s the opposite of being lost.
They had both automatically slowed down and Luke finally made it to a complete halt as their eyes locked. He nodded slowly; taking in the sentence and repeating it in his mind before letting it fade. “Better people,” he repeated, tasting the words carefully. “Nobody said it would be this fucking hard.”

Yeah.” She had seemed okay at the time. But whenever he thought back on it now, he was quickly reminded of all the times when she had seemed anything but okay. Of heated fights and drunken nights. Of trying to understand what she was going through and for that push them further apart. But they had always fought. They’d always been reluctant to talk about the things that were personal to them. So, how was he supposed to know that this time was any different?
He briefly glanced at Luke when he expressed the same concern for her, then returned to look at the trees ahead of them. Rafael knew that it was a matter of time before they were going to get her into trouble. But he also knew that she would go willingly. And maybe that had never bothered him before because he’d usually been right there with her. But considering how close to death she’d already been, and how those shifters operated, he had a bad feeling about this time turning out much worse. “I don’t think she cares about that.” About getting into trouble. About the dangers and risks. If anything, that seemed to be part of what attracted her to go back.

Hey, it’s okay,” he quickly assured him, slowing his steps as he turned to look at him. “It’s easy to say one thing when you’re calm but to follow that advice in a situation like that is another story.” As much as he’d like to have that kind of control over his instincts and emotions, the truth was he didn’t. Besides, they’d never been the type of people to back down from a fight. Rafael had from a young age been taught to fight in most situations in order to survive. Whether it was to get out of the shithole he was in, or to fight against people just so they’d stop messing with him. It was hard to simply get rid of something like that, even if you knew better now.

They looked into each other’s eyes for a moment while the sentence hung in the air. He didn’t know what he’d done if he didn’t have someone like Luke or his pack members to drag him away from that life. Show him that there was something better beyond those well-known walls. And maybe he’d never fit in completely, but he certainly wouldn’t if he didn’t try. “But we have to try. Every day we have to try to learn from those mistakes and do better.” They didn’t have a lot of years ahead of them. And he didn’t want to waste the little time he had on never trying. Of settling with his old life because it was all he’d known. “And it’ll be tough. And we’ll fall more than once. But just know that I’ll always be here to help you get back up.” He placed a hand against his upper back for emphasis, wanting him to remember that.
His gaze then drifted to the mansion in front of them, shining its warm lights down on the gravel path as they continued walking. He stepped onto the front porch and opened the front door that led him through the entryway and continued further into the living area. The interior was inspired by the forest surrounding them. Wooden beams adorned the ceiling along with deer-antler chandeliers. The colors were warm and earthy, and many of the furniture pieces were hand-crafted by him. He stopped by the couch that faced the fireplace before he left Luke alone in the living room to find an ice pack, a wet cloth, and two glasses of whiskey. “I’ve already had far too many drinks over the loss of her, but I feel like this finalizes it.” He handed him one of the glasses, before he sat down on the couch, flinching briefly at the pain before he placed the ice pack and cloth on the coffee table. “If that’s who she wants to be, then we’re better off accepting her choice.” He had put up with a lot during his relationship with Victoria, but seeing his friends get treated like that put it into a new perspective. It wasn’t to say that they couldn’t reconcile in the future because people changed. But for now, he was done. Officially over hoping that she’d come to her senses and remain in his life.
